Zebrafish PKR-like Kinase Contains Z-DNA Binding Domains
This study describes a protein kinase in zebrafish, called PKZ, which is closely related to the mammalian double-stranded RNA (dsRNA)-dependent protein kinase (PKR). While PKR contains dsRNA binding domains, PKZ possesses Z-DNA binding domains. These domains are known to bind specifically to left-handed Z-DNA and Z-RNA, which are less common forms of nucleic acids. The study shows that PKZ is also induced by viral infection and inhibits protein synthesis in a similar manner to PKR. The authors speculate that the Z-DNA binding domains may play a role in the host antiviral response in fish, potentially targeting viral genes. https://researchgate.net/
