Interleukin 1 Antagonist Anakinra in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis A Pilot Study
This research article reports on a pilot study investigating the safety and tolerability of Anakinra (ANA), an interleukin-1 (IL-1) receptor antagonist, in patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The study, involving 17 ALS patients with dominant or exclusive lower motor neuron degeneration (LMND), demonstrated that ANA was safe and well-tolerated, with only mild adverse events reported. While the study was not designed to assess efficacy, the researchers observed a decrease in inflammatory markers, particularly fibrinogen, during the initial phase of treatment. However, the development of anti-ANA antibodies in a majority of the participants raises concerns about potential limitations to long-term effectiveness. Further research with larger and more heterogeneous patient groups is needed to determine whether targeting IL-1 can effectively slow the progression of ALS. https://researchgate.net/
